Research
Each resident is required to carry on some research project during their three years of residency. Research should be faculty-supervised. Residents will meet with the Director of Research (Dr. Heilman) to discuss research alternatives and ideas. When residents determine their research interest, they will select a faculty member who will help them develop a research proposal and discuss implementation. Some projects can be accommodated into their spare time; others may require elective time in research. Please discuss this with your research project faculty mentor and with the program director. By the middle of the third year of residency, each resident should have prepared a written report of their research experience, and during the last 2 months of residency, each resident will present their research at Neurology Grand Rounds. Written records of the progress of your research project become a part of your portfolio.
In addition, throughout the residency, residents are encouraged to write up cases or treatments of interest as case reports or short notices. This experience is valuable, as it allows residents carefully to review a subject, learn how to evaluate the clinical literature, and enhance their writing skills under the supervision of a faculty member. Faculty are ready to assist residents. Research interests are noted in the list of faculty.
