Residency Program

Duty Hours

Strict compliance with the ACGME’s duty hours rules is built into the schedule. Residents are scheduled to have one day in seven free of any patient care or educational responsibility averaged over the month. On the day post-call, residents may stay only six hours, during which time they must not take on responsibility for additional new patients. If residents are on an inpatient service, a resident is assigned to cover on post-call afternoons. The on-call schedule will ensure that residents do not have outpatient clinic responsibilities when they are post-call. Residents are required to sign off to the on-call resident by 7 pm weeknights and to the post-call or weekend on-call resident by 2 pm. This will ensure that residents do not work more than 80 hours per week. Residents will also be required to keep a log of their work hours to be submitted monthly to the residency coordinator. Hours spent in approved outside employment (see next section) will count toward all duty hour regulations.
