Check-out Policy
These guidelines serve to facilitate compliance with ACGME work hour regulations.
Night call Monday through Friday begins at 5 pm and ends at 8 am the following morning. Saturday and Sunday call run 8am-8am.
New consults received after 4:30 pm may be deferred to the night call person unless urgent, and consults after 7:30 am may be passed on to the day crew. Of course, all urgent calls should be seen immediately regardless of when they are received. Non-urgent calls are the responsibility of the resident who received the request.
Acceptable check-out includes follow-up of labs or scans, lumbar punctures that should be done the same day, and (generally) one new consult or E.R. call if workload reasonably prevented its completion. (Clinic days with several new consults would be a good example).
Transfers should ideally be accepted on one’s own shift. Non-urgent requests are preferably arranged for a time the accepting resident will be present to receive the patient, usually before 5 pm. Still, we are a neurology team and can share in the care of our patients when good check-out is provided. Urgent transfers should be accepted willingly at any time, day or night.
The right balance of individual responsibility and sense of team work will lead to a strong service and good patient care.
