The Jules B. Chapman Professor in Clinical Care and Humaneness Professional Background: M.D. Personal Info Dr. Watson has been Senior Associate Dean for Educational Affairs since 1990. He has been delegated authority for undergraduate medical, physician assistant, graduate biomedical, graduate medical, and continuing medical education. He is recognized as an outstanding teacher having received the Hippocratic Award from the Class of 1985, the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a faculty member, has been selected as Teacher of the Year, is a Florida Blue Key Distinguished Faculty member, is on the UF College of Medicine’s Wall of Fame, was the recipient of the Florida Medical Association’s Leadership in Medical Education Award for 1998, the Florida Medical Association Medical Student Section’s Advocate for Medical Students Award for Outstanding Service by a Physician Mentor to Medical Students, for 2003, and the 2005 recipient of the Gerold L. Schiebler Student Advocate Award for the University of Florida AMA-MSS Chapter. In addition, Dr. Watson was the UF College of Medicine’s 2004-05 and 2005-06 nominee for the AAMC Humanism in Medicine Award, and was a recipient of a 2005 Alpha Omega Alpha Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award. Dr. Watson was Chair of the AAMC’s Group on Educational Affairs for 2001, and is on the AAMC’s Institute for Improving Medical Education External Advisory Committee. He is an acknowledged authority on curriculum, having published many articles, the most recent “Rediscovering the Medical School,” was published in the July 2003 issue of Academic Medicine. He has developed the concept of Mission-Based Budgeting, and written several articles, the most recent, “Mission-Based Budgeting: Removing a Graveyard, in the June 1999 issue of Academic Medicine. He has been invited to numerous medical schools, AAMC meetings, and other professional meetings, to provide talks and workshops on Mission-Based Budgeting and the continuum of medical education.
